Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor
We found Mom's blood pressure was varying, so we started taking it and charting it. We proved that, although it was usually good at the doctor's office, it would vary greatly, especially at night. We got an automatic BP meter at WalMart, and after checking it against my fire department manual unit, we agreed it was amazingly accurate. We found variations from 225/125 to 80/40 during a 36 hour period. To compensate for the lows, we raised the head of her bed about 4 inches, and the lows were better. The doctor gave us medication to treat the highs. This required "hired help," usually a sitter at night, to keep this under control. We believe that these late night low pressure eposodes could have easily been fatal if we had not interveined. Several Doctors insisted we did not need to take her pressure every two years, and they were amazed at the readings we got. They were also amazed that our Mom lived two years after they had given up.
